John Chorlton
Snowboard Coach
John Chorlton was raised a New Englander in Mystic, CT. Brought up racing sailboats, playing soccer, and swimming competitively primed him for a life built around an active lifestyle. Upon completing high school he made his way west to attend school at Western State College of CO (BA, English '97). Snowboarding, mountain biking, skateboarding, and the unbelievable natural setting of the Gunnison Valley lured him in for the long haul. After graduating from WSC John began his career as a freelance writer. Starting out as Contributing Writer for Snowboarder Magazine, John worked as an Editorial Assistant for Snowboard Life Magazine, Assistant Editor for TransWorld Snowboarding's Resort Guide, Researcher for ESPN's X and Winter X Games, and contributing writer to Transworldsnowboarding.com EXPN.com, ESPN Magazine, Music.com, Backcountry Magazine, and Bike Magazine. He also has contributed photos to TransWorld Snowboarding and their web sites as well as EXPN.com. John currently works as a Stage Manager for the X Games and Winter X Games.
John began his career in athletic education as a ski instructor at CBMR in 1993 He started the snowboard program for the Crested Butte Ski and Snowboard Team in 1996 and worked with that program until the spring of 2001. In 2001 John joined the Crested Butte Academy Snowboard Team and been a part of the successes of growing the team and developing an outstanding program since. Through rigorous dryland training, using video analysis, athletic education, and building strong relationships with the athletes John has grown with the team.
Living in Crested Butte with his wife Katie and their son Kai, John still loves the things that first drew him to the valley and has come to appreciate the values of this small community and the healthy lifestyle that comes with being a member of the community. When he is not snowboarding, John can be found spending time with his family, rafting, skateboarding, mountain biking, reading, writing, shooting photographs, traveling, and surfing.
