CBA brings home three first place finishes

Crested Butte Academy, home to the winter/mountain sport and high elevation training and education program, is proud of its cross-country running team, which had a victorious meet at the Leadville Invitational on Saturday, September 8.

The team returned home with three first-place finishes and one second-place finish against several Front Range Colorado schools.

Matt Galley was tested in his middle school 1.5-mile race but dug deep to take first in a close finish with the time of 9:16. Galley ran the distance just under two minutes faster than his race at the Delta Invitational meet on Saturday, September 1.

In the high school girls' race, Maddison Garcia and Colleen Campbell performed brilliantly to take first and second place. Garcia, who is having a great season, raced strongly to finish first in 21:09, three minutes faster than her efforts in this event last year. Campbell, who has raced at altitude only once, finished second behind Garcia with the time of 22:23.

Senior Joe Bosshard dominated his race and continued with his impressive form from last season, winning the high school boys' race in 17:40, over a minute ahead of the opposition.

Crested Butte Academy's cross-country director Trent Sanderson was impressed with his team's results and ability to perform at the high elevation at Leadville.

"The race was run at a high altitude, between 10,500 to 11,200 feet, which is possibly the highest elevation for a cross-country meet in North America and even the world," Sanderson says.

The team's next big meet will be the Maymont Cross-Country Festival in Richmond, Virginia on Friday, September 28.
